Virtual Calligraphy
Another piece of awesome digital graffiti piece by Digital Slaves. This time with Arabic calligraphy by French calligrapher Julien Breton aka Kaalam. The interface allows the calligrapher to choose the texture, the width and height as well as color. Most of all, it feels and looks like the real thing. Equipments involved: one industrial camera at 60 fps, a home made lamp and a touch screen with an interface. Super cool ~

High Line opens!!!

Photo Copyright Iwan Baan
The dream urban park High Line has opened! Section 1 of the High Line starting from Gansevoort Street to 20th Street will open Tuesday, June 9.
On the historic day of June 8, Mayor Bloomberg and several New York City leaders and supporters cut the ribbon on the High Line, officially opening the first section to the public, offering visitors the chance to preview the park from June 9 onwards though it is still under construction. I have been following the blog and development closely even though I have lived outside NYC for 2 years now. Really something exciting to see when I go back next time, especially with the High Line running through some of the most interesting art neighborhoods with public art gallery planned for. What i love about how the park is built, is the community involvement. Organized by the Friends of the High Line, it has held over two dozens input sessions to encourage residents and business owners to share ideas. Throughout the design process, community input has been central to the High Line project. Awesome isn’t it?!
High Line’s signature landscape is designed by James Corner Field Operations. Some early renderings by the architects Diller Scofidio +Renfro.
About the Park
The High Line was originally constructed in the 1930s, to lift dangerous freight trains off Manhattan’s streets. Section 1 of the High Line will soon open as a public park, owned by the City of New York and operated under the jurisdiction of the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation. Friends of the High Line is the conservancy charged with raising private funds for the park and overseeing its maintenance and operations, pursuant to an agreement with the Parks Department.
When all sections are complete, the High Line will be a mile-and-a-half-long elevated park, running through the West Side neighborhoods of the Meatpacking District, West Chelsea and Clinton/Hell’s Kitchen. It features an integrated landscape, designed by landscape architects James Corner Field Operations, with architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro, combining meandering concrete pathways with naturalistic plantings. Fixed and movable seating, lighting, and special features are also included in the park.
Access points from street level will be located every two to three blocks. Many of these access points will include elevators, and all will include stairs.

BMW Z4 Wins Red Dot Design Award
Another exciting day for all woman designers of the world. If you are not aware the new BMW Z4 is designed by two female designers - Juliane Blasi, 32, did the exterior and Nadya Arnaout, 37, the interior. This new car is not just a chick car; it appeals both to the X and the Y chromosomes. It is the first BMW roadster with a retractable hardtop. IMO, looks great, really handsome and still sporty; keeping it much simpler than its predecessor. Perhaps this will be the next thing on my shopping list. ^_^
Watch Juliane talks about her design process for the exterior, and Nadya for the interior.

Polar Clock
A clever piece of time-telling device that uses concentric circles to represent month, day, hour, minute and second. The arc grows as time goes by. This was featured in the February issue of WIRED magazine. Kudos to Actionscript developer Gabriel Bucknall for the design/screensaver and Ed Kauffmann for developing the iPhone app. Download the screensaver (available both for Mac & PC) here and the iPhone app from iTunes.

Dots-drawing Lego Robot

An experimental project by Nils Völker currently part of an art and design exhibition ”Makers & Spectators” at the MU in Eindhoven. He built this robot from lego and has it suspended from the ceiling to draw dots on a pile of paper. The dots are drawn based on the eye tracker’s documentation of what a visitor looks at. Pretty amazing. Check it out in action!

Guten Touch
Guten Touch is an interactive installation that is designed for Red Bull Music Academy 08 by one of my favorite interaction design group - Multitouch Barcelona. The projection system with a 3 x 2 m multi-touch projection wall showcases ways to engage interaction on more human and friendly basis. It explores the possibilities of engaging people with a more natural relationship with technology. Really inspiring stuff.

The Clock Clock

A project by Humans Since 1982. The name says it all, it’s a clock clock. Something I would like in my living space. They also designed a typeface based on this clock, you can download here.
And how the heck does it work? Watch the video:

Define Design
A recent collaboration project with the good folks at Design Linguist. The basis of this project is really to go back to the roots with an open discussion on the definition of DESIGN, especially in the landscape here in Singapore where design is still in its infancy and often time misunderstood. The eventual manifestation has not been decided as the project will be following an organic evolution and pathway relying on the nature/quantity/meanings of the definitions that we will collect. Currently in Phase ONE of the project and calling for entries from all designers/non-designers to join our banter! What is your definition of DESIGN?

Flip Clock on Legs
This quirky clock is designed by Michael Daniel who brought together modern design and vintage technology. The coolest thing is that when the time changes or a number flips over, it looks like the clock is taking a step towards you.
